Emily De La Cruz
M.Ed, NBCT, Educational Consultant — Literacy, K–12
Emily De La Cruz is an Educational Services Consultant with CORE. Emily has a Master’s degree in Reading and TESOL, and is a proud National Board Certified Teacher (ELA-EA, 2011 & 2022). She has spent the last 18 years in various roles within the field of education, including as a middle and high school teacher, literacy coach, disciplinary literacy instructional coach for all content areas, community college instructor, interim assistant principal and National Board Certification coach. She spent a good portion of her career in Miami-Dade County Public Schools where she saw the power of literacy to change the trajectory of students’ lives. Emily has taught Intensive Reading using various curriculums, and materials she created herself to meet the unique needs of struggling adolescent readers. Her experience in Miami also included teaching English Language Arts, ESL for new speakers, and co-teaching Inclusion ELA. Currently, Emily lives and works in the greater Detroit area where she works toward developing relationships with students and teachers to cultivate a sense of belonging that allows for a renewed focus on instruction after the interruption of a global pandemic. Having worked closely with brand new and veteran teachers in many spaces, she takes a collaborative approach to her coaching work which creates partnerships that center students and equity.
Emily believes that education has the potential to be the great equalizer of the playing field. Her personal calling in education is to find the intersection of literacy and social justice, to use her time and talents to create classrooms where students are provided a robust and joyful learning environment that allows them to become skilled thinkers, readers, and writers which cultivates a passion for life and the opportunity to be prepared to do whatever they choose once they graduate.
She is committed to supporting schools by building teacher capacity in: data collection and analysis; providing explicit, systematic instruction aligned to the Science of Reading; becoming reflective practitioners; and using evidence-based best practices to address the needs of all students.
When she is not in a school, Emily can be found chauffeuring her two kids to dance and basketball, on her mat practicing yoga, or reading all the books her little heart desires.
