Tonya Burke

M.Ed., NBCT, Educational Consultant – Math, K–8

Tonya Burke is an Educational Consultant with CORE. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Florida State University in Psychology, and a Master of Science degree from Nova Southeastern University in
Elementary Education. Ms. Burke holds certifications in the State of Florida in Elementary Education K–6, as well as Middle Grades Mathematics, K-9. She received her National Board Certification in 2001 and has renewed twice to maintain her status as an NBCT.

Her career has spanned over 34 years as a K-8 teacher, middle grades mathematics teacher, elementary mathematics coach, and district instructional facilitator. As a mathematics specialist, she has worked at the state level on numerous committees to ensure equity and alignment of standards in mathematics for the state of Florida, while serving as a leader in her current district by facilitating professional learning to over 14,000 educators on math pedagogy, engaging students in mathematics, thinking and reasoning in mathematics, and differentiating instruction in mathematics.

Mrs. Burke is a member of National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and has facilitated
workshops at the national as well state level on “Using Everyday Items to Reinforce Math Concepts” and “Differentiating in the Middle Grades Classroom.” While serving as an adjunct professor at Florida Atlantic University and Nova Southeastern University, she impacted the effectiveness of many educators as demonstrated by results from classroom teachers. Over the last 7 years, she has worked exclusively with 11 underserved, struggling schools to assist with their overall proficiency in mathematics. Through a conscious look at data driven instruction, implementing math best practices, and strengthening the pedagogy skills of coaches and teachers, the schools’ overall mathematics proficiency grew more than 60-80% over the course of 3 years and is maintaining.

Throughout Ms. Burke’s teaching career, she has coined the motto and delivers it whenever she is
working with educators to strengthen students’ knowledge and proficiency in mathematics: “If they
discover it, they will own it!”, “Make your classroom a place of discovery!”
